Hallo liebe Leute,

I had the same "problem" after my first firmware upgrade from retail version to V 1.00.013 2004.09.09 - suddenly I could not see my Passphrase (normal word used as seed for hexadecimal key generation...), instead there were the asterisks. I contacted SMC support, and they said it was OK, since this approach increased the safety.... The only way out of this is selecting as you did the "Manual hex key" instead of "Passphrase" and VERY CAREFULLY entering the hexadecimal combination of 13 hexa digits (like 0A, 11, B7, etc.). The same combination must be exactly entered on each WiFi connected PC on their WEP configuration tool.
-----------------

Ivan
P.S. SMC2804WBR V.2 EU ist OK für Part No. 751.7441, sonnst geth's nicht

'lo Hohenlohe, 'tis okay, I'm half-Irish. :) I even prefer English. So, thank you for the information, if those asterisks are increasing the safety...then there's nothing to be said against it, though it won't solve my case really, but ... okay.

where're you from btw?

Well, I think that the most important service from a router like this is to connect the other PC to the local network. And, if one writes down exactly the 26 hexadecimal digits (for 128bit WEP key) - first on a piece of paper, then in the SMS Wireless security configuration, everything is on a good way. The last step - writing the same hexadecimal sequence on a client PC wireless interface configuration. An example of such key: "ABCDEF1234567890FEDCBA2007". Use it on both computers, and you get it working. Do not forget to specify the key length of 128 bit. Normally, you need not change this setup for the whole life of the router...
I am from Slovakia, living in Bratislava. Right now I am trying to configure the same SMC so that it is accessible for setup or status control from wherever on the internet.
