fritzbox screwed after update and recovery

OK, so I didn't sign up here first and didn't know about the downgrade.tar....

Did the upgrade to 29.04.15 this morning and found that the web page with the DSL DSLAM and ATM specs was no longer available. Wanted to downgrade to the 29.04.03-3306 and the box told me that was a no-no... and would keep the current version. Searched the web, found this, registered and downloaded downgrade.tar / downgrade2.tar and went throught the steps manually via telnet. Uploaded the previous version and got the same error msg.

Now the real problem is that I can't access the web pages any more. After a cold start I have just a few seconds where I can sign in and by the time I have accessed the upload page the web pages no longer appear.

What I have found out via telnet is that the following:

It looks like some process is re-right'ing the ../www/.. files and creating an infinite loop by linking the files to their own directories. Then if you try to access the login page via the web you get the last msg. Logical.

So what can I do to recover this? Can I unlink the directories?

In the end I want to get back to the 29.04.03.. FW revision because I want to see when DTAG upgrades the ATM interfaces so that 1&1 can provide me with the service I am paying for, i.e. 6 MBit instead of the 3MBit that I now have.

Why did AVM take that out and how can it be added to the current FW release?

Hope someone has a working fix for this screw-up.

Update on issue

In the mean time I managed to get into the update tab long enough to get the downgrade.tar and then the 29.04.03... revision installed, but only after clearing the complete config (factory reset). Came up OK and reconfigured everything. Made a copy of the config then tried the 29.04.15 upgrade again.

Bad mistake. The same warning came up again about changing the hardware/firmware with something NOT from AVM and the GUI dissappeared again.

Now I can't get the GUI to stay up long enough to downgrade again. DSL and internet still work, or else I wouldn't be in this forum....

Can any one tell us how to get the ftpd working so that I can push the updates manually, i.e. how to start the deamon and where the *.tar files need to be placed so that the update happens? Or how do I get this buggy firmware to stop changing the permissions of the /usr/www/all/... files and linking them into a loop? I have wasted so much time on this $#|t today, if I calculated my hourly wage on this I could have just bought a new box..... aggggghhh.

Last update, case closed.

Didn't get a reply, asked at AMV but can't wait until they reply so I used

fritz.box_fon_wlan_7170.04.15.recover-image.exe

which worked well. Sure glad that I made a backup of the configuration from ~.04.03, it was accepted and saved me the work of typing in everything once again. At least this part worked as it should.

btw. you don't need a direct cable on NIC A from the PC, it works through a switch as well, as long as the switch is on NIC A on the F.Box

Why the hell does AVM want to prevent us from using older revisions of FW? Isn't it our problem if it doesn't work and isn't supported? Take the version checks out, it would save the world man years of work and agro.

Still, it would be interesting to find out how to get the ftpd to work.... a post from someone who as done this would be great. Maybe I'll trace the connection tomorrow when I add the TelefonSparbuch_LCR_Updater.tar and enum_aktivieren.tar extentions.

Since the x.04.01 versions AVM provides with every official version not only the firmware image but the same firmware as recover-version. Download those and keep them on your harddisk. With these recovers you can go back to any version you like.
I would not restore old settings from another firmware version. That's often responsible for screwed up configurations.

You did it the right way. Recover the box with the Recovery-tool from AVM Homepage, but you should not restore the configuration from a backup. It's a hard work, but reset the box to factory settings and do the complete configuration by hand. After this your box will run stable and satisfactory.

ftpd works only with partitions on attached USB hard drives. It is pretty complicated to get ftpd showing the root filesystem of the box as well. Actually I haven't seen a solution for that at all so far. Some people used bftpd (from the ds-mod) for that. I tried using bftpd, but it had conflicts with the built-in ftpd of the 7170. It may be worth a try - but if you install the ds-mod, you may just as well use samba for that purpose.
