Intertex Solves Problems with Emergency Calls Using IP Telephony
The Swedish company Intertex Data AB recently released the IX67, a firewall/router with special IP telephony functions, that solves the problems of emergency calling from IP based telephony systems. The IX67 also increases telephony reliability and accessibility at blackouts or disruptions of the Internet service.

The recent expansion of IP telephony to a growing number of homes and offices around the world has given rise to a debate on the safety and reliability of IP based telephony systems. Authorities handling emergencies have raised warnings about the difficulty to determine where a call is made from.

Standards for locating the origin of an IP based call are being developed, but until such standards are implemented and widely spread, the best alternative for emergency calling is to fall back to a local traditional telephone line, since its location is known. In addition, the traditional telephone line is often more reliable than the IP network and also works during power loss. The IX67 utilizes these advantages to make emergency calling in an IP telephony system safe and reliable.

The IX67 GW model includes both FXS ports for using analogue phones as IP phones and an FXO port connected to a traditional telephone line. Working as a mini gateway between SIP based IP telephony and the traditional telephone network, the IX67 ensures that all emergency calls are routed to the traditional telephone network through the FXO port. In case of a blackout or a temporary failure of the Internet connection, the telephones connected to the IX67 will automatically be hardwired to the traditional telephone line, which allows important calls even at power loss or loss of Internet connection.

The analog phones attached to the IX67 have dual functionality, serving both as conventional telephones for back up via the traditional telephone network and as IP phones. As an IP phone, it becomes a general SIP client that can use either the built-in SIP server or an external service provider’s IP telephony service. A number of SIP-based hardware or software phones can also simultaneously be connected to the LAN and become fully integrated with the SIP service.

In general, the IX67 is a powerful firewall and NAT router connecting a LAN to the Internet. The product has a unique and complete support for SIP based person-to-person communication, of which IP telephony or Voice over IP (VoIP) is one major application. With the IX67, the user can communicate with the open SIP world using telephony, video, instant messaging, presence and much more. Most other firewalls and NAT routers cannot handle SIP traffic at all, or only allow a subset of the possibilities through unreliable or insecure methods.

The IX67 is a broadband router for advanced home users, home offices and businesses with up to 50 users and is prized from 229 to 385 USD, depending on model and options.

also die Fritz!Box Fon macht das schon immer so...
