After reading all the stuff about problems upgrading the firmware I just want to let you know how it worked for me.
I recently bought an Arcor Twintel with firmwar 3.91 as I found out with ###520#
Since I had the same problems often described in this forum -freeze of the keys, poor wlan-connectivity, poor qualitiy of wlan-phonecalls- i wanted to upgrade the firmware. Trying this i encountered the also often described problem that the phone ran out of memory and didn't upgrade the firmware.
Since I wanted to try the wlan-update i switched the phone into engineering mode (###800#) and while switching back (after having not succeeded) accidentally reset the phone to factory settings entering ###810# instead of ###801#. Since everything (including my addressbook) was lost anyway I tried the upgrade once more and it worked smoothly. For the upgrade i used either the Arcor-Utility which came with the phone or the Pirelli-software (I had both installed and don't remember which one I used) I donloaded from sipgate:

Anyhow both tools connect to the phone without problem and were used for uploading my addressbook later on.
There's only one drawback, the firmware (pirelli_399d.tar.gz) which i found somewhere in this forum does only support Italian and English. But that's only relevant for me when I want to use T9 for German text messages, what i seldom do since is rubbish anyway, at least the German version.
To make a long story short, simply setting the phone back to factory settings did the job for me. Hope these notes will help others to upgrade successfully too.
