Hi dear friends,

My German is not so good so I shall write in English ;)
I have FritzBox 7140 and I have configured one VOIP number on it. I have noticed that if i leave the FritzBox 7140 router on continuously on for a couple of days then the phone lines hangs. And I am unable to dial out. However the only way i could fix the problem is by restarting my FritzBox 7140 router. Is this a known issue or has anyone found out the reason why this happens?
Many thanks in advance if somebody can enlighten me with their advice :D

save the fritz!box configuration
factory reset
configure ISP and VoIP account manually
Pls try again and write the result.

edit: If a router hangs after few month, then I can accept this.
But after a couple of days - that's bad.

@Ecki-No1:
Thanks for your kind reply...
I in fact an English speaking person. I only reposted in German by using Google Translate because I noticed that many people had opened this original post but no one replied.
I shall do a factory reset but i shall see if that will cure the problem. But i am absolutely sure that i need to perform the Router reset after every 2-3 days. Because when i receive a call then i get the call ringing in and i pick up the phone and then I am not able to hear the caller and if i make a call then normally there is a dialling tone before making the call. So when the router's VOIP connection is hanging then i am unable to hear the dialling tone prior to dialling a number :(

Hi,
can you explain in a bit more detail what kind of Internet access you use, whether there is another router between you and the Fritz!Box Fon, and which VoIP provider you use?

Some revisions of your Router became very hot,
Be sure that your fritzbox is located in a position,
that air can flow aroud the device.
The best way, to ensure air circulation is
to mount the device on the wall.

@gandalf:
I bascially use sipgate and i have been using sipgate on different voip devices for years among my family who are in different cities.. I bought a couple of Fritz!Box 7140 from different sellers on German eBay and both Fritz!Box 7140 suffer exactly the same problem i.e., internet/voip telephony hangs after a couple of days.. However then i bought a couple of Fritz!Box 7170 routers from different sellers on German eBay and both do not suffer this hanging problem... Now i need to use these two Fritz!Box 7140 routers so that is why i need to investigate more about why this is occurring on this particular model.. :rolleyes:

[EDIT: Absolutely superfluous full-quote of HyBird's posting removed. --gandalf.]

@HyBird:
I have tested both FritzBox 7140 & FritzBox 7170. However this particular VOIP/SIP telephony hanging problem only occurs on FritzBox 7140. As far as I know from my limited knowledge and observations of these two models, I thought that both FritzBox 7140 & FritzBox 7170 were more or less same and I also know that on these forums there is some information available about how to convert FritzBox 7140 to make it behave like FritzBox 7170. The only difference from outlook is that FritzBox 7140 has a shorter WiFi antenna than FritzBox 7170...
Therefore I am utterly disaapointed with FritzBox 7140 since it seems to have some inherent VOIP telephony hanging issues... :mad:

Did you modified firmware e.g. for ANNEX A/B?

@Ecki-No1:
These are German routers and I have converted them to English version. Now they are running on Annex-B version 30.04.67. I have used the same conversion procedure as what I have used for FritzBox 7170 router.
I use this FritzBox 7140 with my fibre optic broadband line so Annex A/B has not been an issue for me...

Great that now we learned a little bit more about your configuration. :)
Did you try the option "Keep port forwardings of the internet router active"?
You will find this under the tab "Extended Settings" of "Internet Telephony".

I am still at loss to understand what exactly your configuration is. You talk about several 7170 and 7140 in use.

- How are they connected?
- What is provided by your ISP?
- Which ISP is it?
- Is there any other router in this setup?
- Do you get public IP addresses from your ISP or is it private ones?
- How often do IP addresses of your ISP change (is this connected with the mysterious VoIP problem)?

@KunterBunter:
Thanks for the advice.. I have changed the settings from 5mins to 1mins in "Keep port forwarding enabled every". lets see what happens..

@gandalf94305:
I only use one router at a time;) Its that when a couple of years ago i found out about the wonders of FritzBox and also when i found out this helpful forum then in the heat of the moment i bought some 7170 & 7140 routers from German eBauy so that i could enlighten all my family and friends with the wonders of VOIP technology & FritzBox... However I only have used among my family 7170. But I still have a couple of 7140 lying around and there are a couple of relatives to whom i wanted to let experience the VOIP technology with FritzBox. Thus i need to use the fully functional 7140. So at the moment at my home i try only one 7140 at a time and have been monitoring their performance. In the past i originally gave 7140 routers to my family members and they faced the call hanging problems. For example a call comes form Sigpgate phone number. The phone rings but i can not hear the caller. In the FritzBox WebGUI is shows that the Sipgate number is registered but i am unable to hear the voice of the caller. Neither I hear the dailling tone when i try to call out. Now the thing which is bugging my mind is that 7140 routers were purchased by independent German guys and they face exactly the same problem..I do not think its an ISP issue since I have not seen this problem when i use my 7170 or when i use my Siemens Gigaset IP phone.. This hanging up and the dailing tone disappearance problem only occurs with 7140 routers :rolleyes:

In order to understand possible reasons for this behaviour, one should have a look at the different protocols and data flows involved. To put it very simple: ringing is SIP, talking is RTP.

If the phone rings when somebody calls the sipgate number, it means that you don't have a problem with registrations and incoming TCP traffic to the SIP port of the Fritz!Box Fon. What you say about the registration status of sipgate is consistent with this.

If there is no voice on one side (usually the inbound stream is blocked), this hints at some router or codec issues. The provider may send data encoded with a codec that is not really supported by your device, or use special SIP options that cause problems. Most problems of this one-way communication sort (usually your voice can be heard at the other end!), however, come from router issues. Routers may need NAT keep-alives, have strange SIP-ALGs, deliberately prohibit certain data streams, or simply lack forwardings to permit the incoming voice stream. In your case, there may be no router at your premises, but many optical fibre networks use private address ranges internally (towards customer premises equipment), that will be mapped to public address ranges by ISP routers. Therefore, it would be helpful to see what kind of IP address is assigned to the LAN1 port of your Fritz!Box Fon 7140. Is it a public or a private address?

Also: to make sure this really is a Fritz!Box problem, try connecting a PC with a softphone directly to your ISP-provided port - without a router. Will you still experience the same problems with one-side communications or hangs?

It is a bit difficult to diagnose issues like this without knowing the whole set of components involved - especially, if this happens in different country most readers here may only have limited experience with.

@gandalf94305:
Thanks for your kind input...
I have actually got one Sipgate account configured on my Siemens Gigaset IP phone and one configured on the FritzBox 7140. However the Sipgate account configured on my Siemens Gigaset IP phone NEVER hangs.. Whereas the one on this FritzBox 7140 hangs every other day. I did change the setting of "Keep port forwarding enabled every" down to "1min" but i have noticed that router is hanging for dialling out. Just right now when i try to use my Sipgate account from the FritzBox router 7140 the how is normally works is that once i dial a number then first of all i hear a tone in the phone and then the phone dials the number. But when the VOIP of FritzBox 7140 is hanging then that initial dialling tone disappears... so what it means that i am unable to dial out using Sipgate to call out and if somebody calls me then the phone rings but when i pick up the phone then I can not hear anything...

Just right now the Sipgate account on my FritzBox 7140 has hung... I have not performed a restart yet.. Is there anything you want me to check while the problem is present??? :confused:
