How does MWI works?

Hi,

Can someone explain me what the following option in my Fritz!box 7050 means?

"Neue Nachrichten am Telefon signalisieren (MWI)

Die FRITZ!Box informiert Sie über das Telefon, ob sich neue Nachrichten in der Mailbox Ihres Telefonie-Anbieters befinden. Bei neuen Nachrichten finden Sie einen Eintrag in der Anrufliste Ihres Telefons."

In the English version it says:

"Message waiting indication on the telephone (MWI)

FRITZ!Box notifies you by telephone when new messages arrive at the mailbox of your telephony provider. New messages are indicated by an entry in your telephone's Call List."

But I don't quite get this... How are new messages indicated by an entry in my telephone's call list? Is it like a missed call? Does the Fritzbox calls the phone with a phonenumber that represents the voicemail in some way?

I suppose there is a special VOIP protocol to be notified of voicemail?

That is all correctly

The number is *694* (vanity: *MWI*).
If you dial back (or spontaneously) the *694* you get a tuuut and after onhook you get a callback with *694*003*002*009#: 3 voice messages, 2 fax, 9 emails.

Yes, in germany 1und1,gmx and sipggate suport this.
