Hello,

Sunday I made a new image with an external image un USB stick, based on R2821 ?, which was not mounted automatically. Just to be sure there was a real problem, I did an SVN update, make dirclean, and a new menuconfig, and built a new image based on R2825.
I have the same problem: When I start the box, with an USB stick connected, the stick is detected, but not mounted. After I have loaded ext3 by using modprobe, I can mount the stick by hand, and it is mounted without any problem.
Also when I detach and attach the stick, it is not mounted automaically.
With a previous build, based on R2810 the automounting did work correct.
There are more differences between my 2810 build, and my 2825 build, but I don't think they influence this problem. My 2810 based build was a build with a few patches I made myself, for 2825 I used the repository version.
The 2825 build has more packages, of which some are placed on the external USB stick.

For your information:

syslog of R2825 box, until I mounted the stick by hand

Hi.
I can't test at the moment because I don't have a box. And the author has no time for support. But I'm wondering that mdev is working at all. Are there no hanging processes in ps?
Can you have a look in the folder /lib/mdev. Everythin okay here? Rights for the files...

Regards
Oliver

all files in /lib/mdev have rights 755 user root
No hanging processes in ps.
The most strange I find is that mdev worked in 2810, but not in 2825.

Hi.
I had a quick look over the changesets. For me 2812 and 2813 are suspicious. Perhaps you can revert these, "make busybox-dirclean" and try again.

Regards
Oliver

The correct order is first do "make busybox-dirclean" and then revert :).

I did a revert, and even a full rebuild, but the new 2810 image had the same problems.
I did try with the old image, and that still works on this box.
So it must be a matter of incompatible packages.
Unfortunatly I didn't store the configuration file of the working box :( , the only thing I know it had hand made patches of gw6, but I don't think they did the job.
I will retry with a lot less packages, and keep you informed.

BTW I also tried the same configuration (2825) without mdev, in that case there was also no automount, and it was less stable. (Regular reboots, and complains about sh which needed to be restarted in syslog)

Jaap

I did try mdev (when it was on by default) but ran into the same error messages. Was hard to get rid of them (dectivating mdev was not enough) since the device table needs to be reset as well.

Did you run a "make mdev-dirclean" after deselecting? The changes to the device table should be reverted then.

Yes, I did.

And I just created a smaller version based on R2831, where mdev is working as expected.
Now its just a matter of just adding packages, until it goes wrong again.

Jaap

The .config is packed into the tar firmware image.

Oliver

Problem solved

After creating about 20 images I found the problem :) :
When I move e2fsprogs to the external image it fails.

They are necessary by mdev to be able to mount ext2 or ext3 images.

Tonight I will file a ticket, that it should be impossible to select this combination

Which binary of e2fsprogs is needed by mdev? You can chose this in menuconfig.

The necessaray binaries are selected automatically but you musn't externalize them.

Oliver
