Hello people,

I recently bought an "international" version of the Fritz!box 7170, and I have been playing around with Freetz a bit.

Recently I tried somebody elses images (I had trouble getting my own version to work with some of the features I wanted) from:

http://members.home.nl/fletteboer/

At first, it worked fine.. until I enabled the DSL interface (which was disabled because I was just in the testing fase). From that moment the router reboots every 15 - 20 seconds.

The problem is that the recovery tool (ftp://ftp.avm.de:/fritz.box/fritzbox.fon_wlan_7170/x_misc/english/annex_a) doesn't work as the router restarts before it can push the image.

I have had some experience debricking WRT54G(L) routers. Does anybody know about any similar debricking-methods in the Fritz!box? Is there any hope on rescuing it?

Thanks in advance for your respons.

Thats the problem with foreign images. Noone knows what kind of stuff is in there.

For your recovery you should disable all your firwall and antivirus-stuff. If this recovery doesn't work, you should try a native avm-image without any modifications. There are 2 ways to get it on your Box. First one per ADAM2, second possibility per tools/push_firmware if you have an freetz-environment on your linux-system or virtual machine.
With this native avm-image you can reset to factory-defaults.

The problem is that the recovery tool doesn't work as the router restarts before it can push the image.

Do you assume that or did you try it? Most likely the router does not restart before it can push the image.

This recovery is the debricking tool. If it doesn't work, most likely you have either not the right recovery for your box, or you have some problems with your network settings.

Thank you both for replying to my post!

@Silent-Tears:
could you elaborate on the ADAM2 vs tools/push_firmware methods?

@RalfFriedl:
I tried the recovery .exe, but it wouldn't find the FritzBox. I figured it is because the FritzBox reboots before the tool can find it, or should the tool trigger a mode that doesn't cause the FritzBox to boot the broken image?

My apologies for all the questions. I have a hard time looking up these things as most of the documentation is in German.

You should be more specific with "it wouldn't find the FritzBox".
The recovery would find the box before it reboots, actually only in the first seconds after it starts, before the regular firmware boots. The recovery programm can recover from almost any condition.

As I already said, if it doesn't work, most likely you have either not the right recovery for your box, or you have some problems with your network settings.

The recovery tool often needs to try several times before it gets contact to the box.

EDIT: Perhabs it´s possible for you to translate this site in english. It´s a specific site for recovery and how to configure your network for it.

OK everybody, I got it to work. Indeed it was the Windows Firewall which was enabled. In my defense, I am no Windows user, and I had only installed it for this occassion.

My apologies for causing any trouble.

Congratulation for your success.
But normally the recovery tool ask to accept firewall exceptions during the recovery. Look at my screenshot (Windows XP SP3).
No problem. Windows is a very mysteriously operating system.
