I have several questions concerning of the USB device attached on FBF7170:

1. Usually the USB device connected to FBF has a name like uStor01 (or uStor**). But my USB stick shows a name like USB-Disk-01-0. For my understanding, it is unusual. What could be going wrong? Can I change it to uStor01 in a simple way?

2. I would like to put some program in Freetz externally due to the limited space. Must I set the external directory as what the system recognizes, in my case, /var/ftp/media/USB-Disk-01-0/?

3. Which file system should I use in USB stick? On the AVM website, it says that you must use FAT or FAT32 if you want to access it with built-in FTP. However I have seen in the Forum, people usually use ext2 or ext3. If I use ext3, how can I access the USB stick? BTW, is a SWAP necessary if I want to run a program like Transmission on the USB stick?

4. I got a .image and a .external file after building a image with external method. I need first update the firmware with the .external file on the web interface (currently I am using AVM original firmware), and then update the firmware with the .image file. At the end, I need reboot the box. Is it correct?

Any comments and help are appreciated!

1. USB-Dist..... is the default behaviour. uStor0X-names could be changed by the patch "patch usb storage names"
2. Yes
3. for ext2/3 you must check the kernel-modules. Simple made by the automount-patches. swap is not needed, but useful
4. yes, if your current image can handle .external-files. Otherwise you should first flash an newer fw-image.

Thanks a lot for the answers! It is really helpful to me. Now two more things come up to my mind. First, can I use FAT32 for external module in USB stick. Second thing is: my current firmware is AVM 29.04.76, can it handle .external-file? Can I still update when I get a warn message?

Thank you in advance for your kind help!

.external-files are only used by freetz, so there'S no change to upload it before you installed freetz properly.
I don't think that it's possible to use externaled files on a fat16/fat32 partition, because on fat16/32 there's no executable-bit for the binaries to set. use ext2/ext3 to avoid problems.
