Wideband (HD) telephony possible?

Hi,

Is there currently any firmware available to use a wideband (HD) codec on the Fritz!box 7050 or 7170?

(I know we need a wideband analogue phone for it)

Is this planned?

Yes - it should be possible! You can use the AVM "phone gadget", called "Fritz! Mini" for calls in HD quality. But it's only possible, if the other side has also an corresponding firmware and hardware (the mini).
Needed firmware should be 29.04.49-9710 for 7170.

Are you sure? Because I checked http://www.avm.de/de/Service/Servic...wnload_telefonie/labor_download_telefonie.php and it doesn't say anything about HD voice anymore... I know the older beta firmwares supported that; so I wonder if they dropped it recently?

- Does the wideband voice also works when the Mini is connected to a 7170 ? Or does that only work on a mini + 7270 ?

- Does the Mini have a setting to change the language to English?

HD works with Fritz!box 7170. However, I have no idea about the english Fritz! Mini. This should depend on the firmware of the Fritz!Box. Is there a firmware in english available with Mini support?

I am pleasantly surprised to hear that.

I assume the codec handling is done by the Fritz!box, and not by the Mini? So I wonder why the 7170 doesn't support HD when using a (good quality) analogue phone :-( I checked via telnet the call setup, and it doesn't offer G.722 to the other party. I also checked FBeditor, and I don't see G.722 in the list of codecs (only PCMA/PCMU (=G.711) and G.726).

Do you know if it is G.722 ? Can you please check in Einstellungen/Telefonie/Internettelefonie/Sprachübertragung what codec is being used, while you make a HD call with the Mini on the 7170? I would appreciate that!

I was just wondering if the Mini! menu has a "language change" option. I don't think this is related with the firmware language of the 7170 (BTW, I am using an 7170 with the German firmware).

The analogue phone (POTS == plain old telephone service) itself supports/defines only narrow band from 300Hz to 3400Hz.

I don't know an analogue phone that is able to support wideband.

The bandlimitation from 300 to 3400 Hz is only applied in the exchange, when the analogue signal is being coded to G.711. The actual cable that comes out of an analogue phone definitely has frequencies that are higher than 3400 Hz.

I know that the phones are designed for that narrow band, but the speaker, microphone, and most of the times also the electronics in it, can definitely handle a bit higher frequencies. You can check the internal schematic of a simple analogue phone, and you will, most of the times, not find a bandfilter.
