Converting a German targeted Fritz!Box Fon Wlan to an International version

if I use
"quote SETENV Annex A" getting "501 environment variable not set"

if I use "quote SETENV Annex,A" getting "501 Syntax error: Invalid number of parameters"

similar with the other variables - apart from setting quote SETENV firmware_version avme, which works??

if I use
"GET ENV" - I get unknown Mediatype ?? a file gets created but with zero KB

I can get the currently set variables by querying them one by one
quote GETENV annex
returns annex B
and the others:
HWRevision 95.1.0.0
firmware_version avm
ProductID Fritz_Box_7140
firmware_info 30.04.12

Are you sure you are using the boot loader? Or maybe TI changed the boot loader ftp syntax (which I doubt).

If it doesn't work at all, can you telnet to the box? Can you post what you get?
What do you get if you enter ENV ???
What do you get if you enter SET ???
What do you get if you enter cat environment ???

And then enter cat /etc/init.d/rc.init and post the output.

at FTP at bootup (that looks to me like it is the adam2 bootloader):

Hi telefonicus!
Many thanks for Adam2, your post #167 (and 307 is also useful) - for 7050, it WORKS!

I have one question:
Is Adam2 method for Fritz!Box Fon ATA possible? (I mean special instructions "quote SETENV...") - do you know? I tried searching at the forum and failed :-(

Best regards, Janeo

The forum search engine is poor. Try Google instead and include the term ip-phone-forum in your search string.

Yes, the ATA box has the Adam2 bootloader like almost all Fritzbox routers.

You'll need to enter quote SETENV firmware_version,avme but you can aso use fritz_als_avme_new.tar.

Then recover with
ftp://ftp.avm.de/fritz.box/fritzbox.../fritz.box_fon_ata.en.04.01.recover-image.exe

Good luck!

Another way to kill the box :-(

I read through almost this entire post before starting to try to change the box from German to English (A WLAN 7050 product #2000 2306). I followed very carefully the instructions in post #307. When I got to the part running the recover system, it said:

Searching FRITZ!BOX Fon WLAN 7050 (AnnexB) at:
192.168.178.1
One System Found! Detecting Current Version.
Could not determine the version!

Now what I get is the Power LED flashing and the box does not seem to respond to anything. It does not respond to Telnet, FTP, or Ping (at addresses 1,2,254)

It has been a bit hard to "guess" when to start the FTP because when I apply the power, the connection is established. Then it is cut (ever so briefly) then reestablished. Then a few seconds later (seems quite long but probably about 10 sec) it cuts again (briefly) then reestablishes.

After this failure, I tried to recover using the German version recovery (fritz.box_fon_wlan_7050.04.15.recover-image.exe) and it cannot find the Fritzbox.

Is there anyway to recover from this?

I had the exact same problem (Post 291 and before). Please follow the post below exactly. Important things to check are IP address of PC (make sure it is 192.168.178.10 or above i.e. <=10), set NIC to 10 Mbps and half duplex, and use red cable provided by AVM, re-try the recover-image.exe, up to 10 times.
Also, AVM recommends to enter the arp -d command in the command console. It clears the memorized MAC addresses.

Only? What about:

quote SETENV ProductID,Fritz_Box_???
quote SETENV firmware_version,avme
quote SETENV firmware_info,???

B.regards, Janeo

Janeo schrieb:

I think these variables should remain unchanged since the box is the same product for both languages. No modem, no annex.

You could, however, lower the firmware_info if you have a higher version in German (I haven't seen one yet).

quote SETENV firmware_info,11.04.01 (or set to 00.00.00)

rondunaway schrieb:

Yes, that's what I'd recommend too. Apply all the tricks and then try again and again :)

BTW what was your goal again, Annex A English? Once you have changed the environment variables you cannot recover with the opposite firmware. Use fritz.box_fon_wlan_7050.annexa.en.04.26.recover-image.exe

Thanks rondunaway. It FINALLY worked. It did take quite a few trys. I eventually hooked it up to a new system that doesn't have much other stuff on it. I then followed everything carefully (even more so than before). It still took a few tries. I had a couple of other problems along the way. One was a message "could not recover mtd1" followed by a line that read "WinError 10060". The recover stopped at that point.

I tried again and the recover got a bit further. A few more times and it finally completed.

As you say, just keep at it.

Cheers & Thanks again

I don't understand the last bit of your entry

B:
_='set'

A:
_='GETENV'

I have tried again to modify the ENV file but this time through telnet.
I modified the 4 variables (HWRevision, firmware_info, Annex and firmware_version) and checked the ENV file with cat to make sure they were changed.... then I tried to do a recovery but the recovery exe still detected the "old" variables and and refuses to update when I checked the file again all of them were written back to the original value apart from firmware_version (which then prevents you vom getting to WEB interface until you change back to AVM)
Then I tried to change the variables again but this time use the WEB interface
to upload a new firmware version but that fails as well.....

any ideas ?

I have a german 7050 also from 1und1 but I do not connect to it via LAN but with WLAN. I have convert it to annex A and now I want to convert it to english. Can you please gve me exact info on how to do it as I am a bit confused with what I have read on the forum. Will your solution work with Wlan connection for example or it is necessary to connect via LAN to convert it?

7140

I too have a German Annex B WLAN 7140 that I would like to convert to English Annex A. I have only been able to implement the following commands:
quote SETENV kernel_args annex=A
quote SETENV firmware_info 39.04.26
quote SETENV firmware_version avme

I then run fritz.box_fon_wlan_7140.annex.a.en.04.26.recover-image.exe recovery software and receive the following message:

Searching FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7140 Annex A at: 192.168.178.1
One system found! - Detecting the current version.
Version successfully detected!
Hardware: FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7140
Bootstrap: 1136
Firmware: 39.04.26
FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7140 firmware is incompatible with the recovery firmware

Any ideas???

7140

The last thing I tried was to edit the install script in the "-annex a english-" firmware to accept annex B and AVM but that stops with an "unspecified error"...
I don't know what else to try.

It is possible to get the 7140 to work on annex A (german interface though) with firmware 30.04.02 - (maybe also the 30.04.12) using the annex_a tar files posted here somewhere, but you can't update the firmware any further because it will break the Annex A - or at least it wont start the DSL training anymore??
So you miss out on any new features ...

Anybody any other ideas or has actually managed to get the box converted to english - annex a with the newer firmware?

The install script not only checks for english type but it checks the check sum against the checksum file that comes with the firmware (See code below from install script) It also checks for firmware version as seen by code below.
This is probably why you receive an error.

It may also do other checks that would prevent the install of the firmware. I will study the code further to see. My thoughts are possibly remove the checks from the install script.
******Checksum check****************
if [ -f /var/tmp/filesystem.image ] ; then
if ! /var/chksum /var/tmp/filesystem.image ; then
echo "chksum for file /var/tmp/filesystem.image failed."
echo "set INFO led to off (modul=7, state=1)"
echo 7,1>${LED_DEVICE}
exit $INSTALL_FILESYSTEM_CHECKSUM
fi
echo chksum for file /var/tmp/filesystem.image ok
fi
if [ -f /var/tmp/kernel.image ] ; then
if ! /var/chksum /var/tmp/kernel.image ; then
echo "chksum for file /var/tmp/kernel.image failed."
echo "set INFO led to off (modul=7, state=1)"
echo 7,1>${LED_DEVICE}
exit $INSTALL_KERNEL_CHECKSUM
fi
echo chksum for file /var/tmp/kernel.image ok
fi

********Firmware version check**********
if [ "$middle_newFWver" -lt "$middle_currFWver" ] ; then
echo "error: Firmware downgrade not allowed"
echo "set INFO led to off (modul=7, state=1)"
echo 7,1>${LED_DEVICE}
exit $INSTALL_FIRMWARE_VERSION
else
echo "DEBUG: $middle_newFWver >= $middle_currFWver"
fi
if [ "$middle_newFWver" -eq "$middle_currFWver" ] ; then
if [ "$minor_newFWver" -lt "$minor_currFWver" ] ; then
echo "error: Firmware downgrade not allowed"
echo "set INFO led to off (modul=7, state=1)"
echo 7,1>${LED_DEVICE}
exit $INSTALL_FIRMWARE_VERSION
else
echo "DEBUG: $minor_newFWver >= $minor_currFWver"

else
echo "DEBUG: $middle_newFWver > $middle_currFWver"
fi

Problems with a FritzBox 7050--All Lights Flashing

I followed Haveaniceday procedure to update an 7050 Annex B to Annex A with no problems as it was working. But after that I used the Avm firmware Annex A to update to the lattest version but the Box just went dead with all the lights flashing. it doens't give me any IP and even if I try to use a fixed IP it doenst work, the issue is the same both for LAN or USB. WLAN is not appearing also.

As I have no way to access the router is there any way to recover it?

Thanks alot and again sorry for the trouble

Dead WLAN 7050

Please follow the instructions in the post (link) below which is a different way to convert from annex A to B or B to A in either language (you need to adjust the commands and download the proper files depending which direction you go). I have used the instruction to go B German to A English and the reverse (visa versa) for a wlan 7050. It will also worked for my dead WLAN 7050 which would do nothing, but power light blinked.

If you are successful in recovering you dead fb thank telefonicus for developing the procedure.
